Yes, that's right what you say. I just miss some more critical works about this phenomenon. There are less in relation to works wich are just part of the show. And that's also one truth: the world is not as it is, it is as we make it in every single moment. If we say, that's the way it is, that's how it works, we miss our chance to change it.

So, I'm really curious about your next critical obama caricature the hypnotizer forced you to do some minutes ago :o)

Best wishes
Volker

It's OK, Volkertoons. I understand your feelings towards all this "obamania" and merchandising. But, let me tell you a true story: By the twenties of the last century, Albert Einstein paid a visit to Argentina for a couple of weeks. There was a frenzy in the newspapers and a rush of adds in the family magazines with his image and captions with the word "relative" in them. Even for hair creams! (of course, all they knew was that Einstein was "a famous genius")

All this hipe is the trivial capitalist way to deal with a time of incertitude and the general need of hope vis a vis the growing crisis.
Be patient: after the inauguration day Obama will have to deal with a grim reality and no miracles are in sight. The foam will descend slowly and people will return to their gray daily problems.

Hi Bob. I'm sure you know that my statement was not against you or your work. It's just the fact that you can see every day a new obama portrait done by somebody. And every artist has his own personal reason why he did it. But in that number it's a phenomenon that scares me a little. There's a politician built up to a kind of pop star by the media, and we artists / drawers / cartoonists (yes, I'm also one of these guys, but I don't feel that it's my job to portrait obama) feel called to participate in building on that idol. When I walk through the city, I see Obama shirts in the showrooms of the fashion stores. It's sooo trendy! In the gift shop then I see Obama post cards and other merchandise products. I'm still waiting for Obama plushies and the Obama shaving lotion for men. You know what I mean?

Obama might be the person, who will change a lot and make some things better - or he may not. Who can say this at this time? The man is gloryfied somehow before he did anything what would justify that. Okay, his public relation team can be honoured for doing an excellent job ;o) My opinion is, if someone did a really good job in his profession - politicians, scientists, artists - it's justified to honour him for what he did. But anybody goes mad about a man who has to show at first, what he is able to do.

@Vanessa: Yes, there is a new face rising on the stage of the world. But there are new faces somewhere any time - statesmen, musicians, scientists, philosophers, actors - and under them people who really DID something. But I do not see the thousands of portraits of them. Why? Do they have too ordinary faces that it would be no real experience for an artist to portrait them? Or is there just not such a big show made around them?

@volkertoons: I did this caricature one year ago to try my hand at him for the first time. I'm sure I'll have to draw him again many times in the coming years (it's my job, you know). Just hope it'll be for the good reasons.

@volkertoons: there will be a very imortant day on Tuesday (inauguration) - that's the reason! and all artists try to have experiences with a new face rising on the stage of the world:)

A technical very well done portrait. But what I ask myself often the last time: What makes an artist feel, it could be important or special to draw the 1.000.000th portrait of Obama? Every day when I look into the internet, I am forced to see Obama's face, here, there, everywhere! The day will come I'm going insane about this...
