first of all, i never claimed the us to be less racist than any other country. and yes, the cannibal iconography has been used and perpetuated by hollywood and in other american media. but in doing so it has created a stereotype that, even considering the camp-value of the genre, is hard to separate from black people as such, which makes it racist. i stick with my opinion that that stereotype stereotype is problematical (among other reasons, this is pretty much the only way in which black people are depicted in european cartoons). i am not american myself and sometimes feel strange about the mentality here about which topics are ok and which are not, but i think it is worth questioning traditional iconography which (at least concerning black people) is being done to a greater extent here than in europe.

This cartoon is at www.artwanted.com/salas (USA) since 2004. The stereotype isn't racist; the racism is in the eye of the beholder. By the way, this cartoon is based in iconography exploited by Hollywood from the beginning. Nothing new, the same as tons of cartoons about fat people, magic carpets, indigents... The malice is usually in the eye of the beholder.

cartoons like this would be impossible in the US.. i am not screaming for censorship here but i want to point out the racist stereotype ... even though colonist-in-kettle cartoons are a genre with a proud tradition that can almost compete with desert-island-cartoons (we should think about opening a gallery) they remain problematic. yes i am being politically correct here.
also, the hot dog stand is uneconomical.
