The Sheikh at the pond

They have the largest palaces, the largest yachts, the largest harems, the men from the Orient with their fabulous wealth. No wonder that the sheiks now also capture the ship's ponds, that place where little boys turn into great captains. But instead of common sailboats, the new Oil Princes are launching floating oil rigs. Nothing makes the anachronism between Occident and Orient clearer than this drawing by Ken Pyne from England. While in good old Europe the children handle with toys from the last century, the Arab offspring - with a steady gaze on money – already have the latest high-tech device at the start, to extract even the last puddle of oil.

But there is also another message in this picture: When the oil wells have long run dry and the drilling platforms rotted, the little sailing vessels will still glide on the pond.
